Beach Hazards, Coastal Flooding Expected for Santa Barbara Coasts
A Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory are in effect for Santa Barbara County coasts, bringing dangerous rip currents, elevated surf, and minor to moderate coastal flooding until Tuesday afternoon, October 13.
Santa Barbara County residents and visitors are advised to take immediate precautions due to a Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Los Angeles/Oxnard CA. Dangerous rip currents, elevated surf, and minor to moderate coastal flooding are expected to impact the Santa Barbara County Southwestern Coast and Southeastern Coast.
The Beach Hazards Statement is in effect now, October 11 at 8:56 PM PDT, and continues through Tuesday afternoon, October 13. The Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until Monday, October 12 at 10 PM PDT. High tides are expected to peak around 7.1 to 7.3 feet on Monday and Tuesday mornings, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying beach and harbor areas. While significant damage is unlikely, enhanced beach erosion is possible.
The NWS warns of an increased risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea, and waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, potentially capsizing small boats nearshore. Residents in flood-prone areas should take necessary actions to protect their property. Do NOT drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly; stay off the rocks.
