Beach Hazards & Coastal Flood Advisory for Santa Barbara Coasts
A Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory are in effect for Santa Barbara County coasts until Tuesday afternoon, warning of dangerous rip currents, elevated surf, and minor to moderate coastal flooding.
Santa Barbara, CA – Residents and visitors along the Santa Barbara County Southwestern and Southeastern Coasts are advised to take protective measures for flood-prone properties and stay out of the ocean due to a Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Los Angeles/Oxnard CA.
The Beach Hazards Statement, in effect until Tuesday afternoon, October 13, at 2:00 PM PDT, warns of dangerous rip currents and elevated surf. The Coastal Flood Advisory is active until 10:00 PM PDT Monday, October 12, anticipating minor to moderate coastal flooding during high tides.
High tides are expected to reach between 7.1 to 7.3 feet on Monday and Tuesday mornings. This could lead to minor to moderate flooding in low-lying beach and harbor areas, and enhanced beach erosion. While significant damage is not expected, the risk of ocean drowning is increased, and waves can wash people off beaches and rocks. Small boats nearshore may also be capsized. Large secondary high tides are also predicted each evening.
Actionable Information:
- Protect flood-prone property.
- Do NOT drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
- Remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions; stay near occupied lifeguard towers.
- Stay off rock jetties, as they can be deadly in these conditions.
This alert was issued on October 11 at 1:58 PM PDT.
