Beach Hazards: Dangerous Rip Currents, Coastal Flooding Expected
Santa Barbara County coasts face dangerous rip currents, elevated surf, and minor to moderate coastal flooding through Tuesday afternoon, October 13, according to the NWS.
Santa Barbara County coastal residents and visitors are advised to take immediate precautions due to a Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory issued by the National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA. Dangerous rip currents and elevated surf are expected through Tuesday afternoon, October 13.
Minor to moderate coastal flooding is anticipated near times of high tide, particularly until 10 PM PDT Monday. This flooding may impact low-lying beach and harbor areas, with enhanced beach erosion possible. High tides are expected to peak around 7.1 to 7.3 feet on Monday and Tuesday mornings.
An increased risk of ocean drowning is present. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats nearshore.
Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. Do NOT drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Stay off rock jetties, as they can be deadly in these conditions.
