Beach Hazards Statement Issued: Dangerous Conditions on Santa Barbara Coasts
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for Santa Barbara County Southwestern and Southeastern Coasts until Tuesday, October 13, due to minor tidal overflow, dangerous rip currents, and elevated surf.
Residents and visitors to the Santa Barbara County Southwestern and Southeastern Coasts are advised to remain out of the water due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Los Angeles/Oxnard CA. The statement is effective immediately, from Friday, October 10 at 1:57 AM PDT, and will remain in effect until Tuesday, October 13 at 2:00 PM PDT.
Minor tidal overflow flooding, dangerous rip currents, and elevated surf are expected. Pooling of seawater is possible around high tide in beach and harbor areas. Enhanced beach erosion is also possible. High tides ranging from 6.6 to 7.2 feet are anticipated each morning, with large secondary high tides in the evening.
The NWS warns of an increased risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea, and waves can wash individuals off beaches and rocks, potentially capsizing small boats nearshore. The risk for significant damage to property is low.
For your safety, remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly in such conditions; stay off the rocks.
