Coastal Flooding, Dangerous Rip Currents Expected on Santa Barbara Coast
A Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory are in effect for Santa Barbara County's southwestern and southeastern coasts, warning of tidal overflow flooding, elevated surf, and dangerous rip currents through Tuesday, October 13.
Santa Barbara, CA – Residents and visitors along the Santa Barbara County Southwestern and Southeastern Coasts are advised to take immediate precautions due to a Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Los Angeles/Oxnard CA.
Minor tidal overflow flooding with elevated surf and dangerous rip currents are expected. Minor to moderate coastal flooding is anticipated near high tide, especially during Sunday morning's high tide. These conditions are in effect from today, October 10, at 1:51 PM PDT through Tuesday, October 13, at 2:00 PM PDT.
High tides are projected to peak around 7.7 feet Sunday morning, followed by 7.1 to 7.3 feet on Monday and Tuesday mornings. This may lead to minor to moderate flooding of seawater in low-lying beach and harbor areas, and enhanced beach erosion is possible. While significant damage is unlikely, there is an increased risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea, and waves can capsize small boats or wash people off beaches and rocks.
Actionable Information:
- Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
- DO NOT drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
- Remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers.
- Stay off rock jetties, as they can be deadly in these conditions.
