Alachua County Residents Reminded to Renew Vehicle Tags Promptly
Alachua County residents are reminded to renew their vehicle registrations and tags in a timely manner to avoid penalties. With the end of the month approaching for many, the Alachua County Tax Collector's Office emphasizes the importance of staying current with vehicle tag renewals.
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), vehicle registrations expire at midnight on the owner's birthday. For company-owned vehicles, the expiration is June 30th. Motorists have a grace period until the 10th day of the month following their birthday to renew without incurring late fees. However, waiting until the last minute can lead to unexpected delays, especially with mail delivery or online processing.
“We encourage everyone to check their registration expiration date and plan to renew well in advance,” stated a representative from the Alachua County Tax Collector’s Office. “Renewing early helps avoid any last-minute stress and ensures you remain compliant with state law.”
Residents have several convenient options for renewal. Tags can be renewed online through the FLHSMV website, by mail, or in person at any Alachua County Tax Collector’s Office location. The main office is located at 12 SE 1st Street in the heart of historic downtown Gainesville, with additional service centers available throughout the county.
When renewing, vehicle owners will need their registration certificate or renewal notice, proof of Florida insurance, and payment for fees. For those renewing in person, a valid Florida driver's license or ID card is also required.
Failure to renew a vehicle registration can result in fines and penalties, including potential traffic citations if stopped by law enforcement. The Alachua County Sheriff's Office periodically conducts traffic enforcement operations that include checking for expired tags.
For more information on vehicle registration renewals, residents can visit the Alachua County Tax Collector’s website or contact their office directly during business hours.
