Dust Storm Warning Issued for La Paz, Yuma (AZ), Imperial (CA) Until 6:45 PM MST/PDT

A Severe Dust Storm Warning is in effect for parts of La Paz and Yuma counties in Arizona and Imperial County in California until 6:45 PM MST/PDT, bringing dangerous driving conditions with visibility under a quarter-mile and winds over 50 mph.

A Severe Dust Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Phoenix, effective immediately until 6:45 PM MST/6:45 PM PDT today, September 16.

This warning impacts southwestern La Paz County and west-central Yuma County in Arizona, as well as southeastern Imperial County in California. At 5:47 PM MST/PDT, radar detected a wall of dust near Martinez Lake, extending to northeast of Kinter and near Wellton, moving west at 35 mph.

Drivers can expect less than a quarter-mile visibility and strong winds exceeding 50 mph. This creates dangerous, life-threatening travel conditions. The warning specifically includes AZ Interstate 8 (mile markers 1-23), CA Interstate 8 (mile markers 80-96), and AZ Route 95 (mile markers 29-55).

Areas impacted include Yuma, Martinez Lake, Fortuna Foothills, Blaisdell, Algodones Dunes, Kinter, Andrade, Ligurta, Winterhaven, and Araby.

If driving, avoid dust storms if possible. If caught in a dust storm, pull off the road, turn off your lights, and keep your foot off the brake. These actions can help prevent accidents in low-visibility conditions.
