Extreme Heat Watch Issued for Yuma: Prepare for Dangerously Hot Conditions
An Extreme Heat Watch has been issued for Yuma by the NWS Phoenix AZ, effective from Wednesday morning, October 4, through Thursday evening, October 5, with temperatures potentially reaching 104-107 degrees Fahrenheit; residents should take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
YUMA – Residents in Yuma are advised to prepare for dangerously hot conditions as an Extreme Heat Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Phoenix AZ. This watch is effective from Wednesday morning, October 4, at 11:38 AM MST, through Thursday evening, October 5, until 8:00 PM MST.
Afternoon temperatures are forecast to reach between 104 and 107 degrees Fahrenheit, posing a Major Heat Risk. This level of heat significantly increases the potential for heat-related illnesses. Overexposure can lead to heat cramps and heat exhaustion, and without prompt intervention, can progress to heat stroke.
The NWS urges residents to take extra precautions, especially those who work or spend time outdoors. It is recommended to reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours. Familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
For outdoor workers, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. If someone is overcome by heat, move them immediately to a cool, shaded area. Heat stroke is a medical emergency – call 911 immediately.
Public cooling shelters may be available in some areas. Residents are encouraged to consult county officials for more detailed information regarding cooling shelter locations and availability.
