Extreme Heat Watch Issued for Yuma: Prepare for Dangerously Hot Conditions
An Extreme Heat Watch is in effect for Yuma from Wednesday morning through Thursday evening, with dangerously hot temperatures between 104 and 107 degrees Fahrenheit expected; residents should take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
YUMA – Residents in Yuma should prepare for dangerously hot conditions as an Extreme Heat Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Phoenix AZ. The watch is effective from Wednesday morning, October 7th, through Thursday evening, October 8th.
Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach between 104 and 107 degrees Fahrenheit, posing a Major Heat Risk. This level of heat significantly increases the likelihood of heat-related illnesses. Overexposure can lead to heat cramps and heat exhaustion, and without intervention, can escalate to heat stroke.
To lessen the impact of the extreme heat, take extra precautions, especially if working or spending time outdoors. If possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours. It is crucial to know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration advises frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments for those working outdoors. If someone is overcome by heat, move them to a cool, shaded location immediately. Heat stroke is an emergency; call 911 without delay.
Public cooling shelters may be available in some areas. Residents are encouraged to consult county officials for more detailed information on cooling shelter locations.
