Storm Surge Watch Issued: Life-Threatening Flooding Possible
A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for Coastal Levy, including Cedar Key, Yankeetown, and Fowler Bluff, with life-threatening storm surge of 2-4 feet possible from Friday morning to Saturday morning. Residents should complete evacuation and flood preparations immediately.
A Storm Surge Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tampa Bay Ruskin FL, effective October 8 at 5:13 PM EDT. This watch indicates the potential for life-threatening storm surge flooding for Coastal Levy, including the communities of Cedar Key, Yankeetown, and Fowler Bluff.
Residents in these areas should prepare for significant impacts, with peak storm surge inundation potentially reaching 2-4 feet above ground in surge-prone areas. The primary window of concern for this storm surge is from Friday morning until Saturday morning. Evacuation efforts and flood preparations should be completed soon, before conditions become unsafe. If evacuation orders are issued for your area, leave immediately to avoid being cut off from emergency services.
Potential impacts include areas of inundation with storm surge flooding, damage to several buildings near the coast, and sections of near-shore escape routes and secondary roads becoming weakened or washed out. Major beach erosion, heavy surf, and strong rip currents are also expected. Moderate damage to marinas, docks, boardwalks, and piers is possible.
In addition to storm surge, expect additional rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches, with localized higher amounts, which may lead to localized flooding. Heed any flood watches and warnings. Wind speeds are forecast to be below tropical storm force, with peak gusts of 10-15 mph and gusts to 20 mph. Tornadoes are not expected at this time. For more information, visit weather.gov/tbw.
