Storm Surge Watch Issued for Coastal Levy County
A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for Coastal Levy County, with life-threatening storm surge of 2 to 4 feet possible due to Hurricane Isaias. Residents should prepare immediately and follow all official instructions.
Coastal Levy County residents: Prepare for life-threatening storm surge. A Storm Surge Watch is in effect, signaling potential inundation of 2 to 4 feet along the coast from Suwannee River to Yankeetown, according to a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tampa Bay Ruskin FL on October 8 at 11:09 AM EDT. This watch is expected to remain in effect until at least 8:00 PM UTC today.
Hurricane Isaias, currently located approximately 580 miles southwest of Cedar Key FL with 85 mph winds moving east-northeast at 10 mph, is forecast to bring significant impacts. These include areas of inundation, damage to structures near the coast, washed-out escape routes, major beach erosion, and damage to marinas. While tropical storm force winds are not currently a concern for our local area, storm surge poses a serious threat.
Residents should immediately check their emergency plans and supplies. Follow all advice from local officials regarding evacuations. Monitor weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news outlets for updates. Additional preparedness information can be found at ready.gov, getagameplan.org, and redcross.org. The next local statement from NWS Tampa Bay Ruskin FL is expected around 6 PM, or sooner if conditions warrant.
