Storm Surge Watch Issued for Coastal Levy: Act Now
A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for Coastal Levy, including Cedar Key, Yankeetown, and Fowler Bluff, with life-threatening inundation of 2-4 feet possible through Saturday morning; complete evacuations and preparations immediately and remain sheltered.
A Storm Surge Watch has been issued for the Coastal Levy area, including Cedar Key, Yankeetown, and Fowler Bluff, effective until 1:15 PM UTC today, October 9th. The National Weather Service (NWS) Tampa Bay Ruskin FL warns of a potential for life-threatening storm surge.
Residents in these areas should prepare for 2-4 feet of inundation above ground in surge-prone areas, with significant impacts possible through Saturday morning. This includes potential damage to buildings near the coast, weakened escape routes, major beach erosion, and damage to marinas.
Flood preparations and any ordered evacuations should already be complete. Evacuees are urged to be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. Once the surge arrives, residents must remain sheltered in a safe location and not venture outside.
While winds are forecast to remain below tropical storm force (10-15 mph with gusts to 20 mph), and the tornado threat is low, localized flooding from an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain is possible. Heed any flood watches and warnings. For more information, visit weather.gov/tbw.
