Life-Threatening Storm Surge Expected for Coastal Levy County
A life-threatening storm surge of 2 to 4 feet is expected along the coast of Levy County, with a Storm Surge Watch in effect due to Hurricane Isaias; residents should prepare for potential flooding, tornadoes, and follow official guidance.
LEVY COUNTY, FL – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tampa Bay Ruskin has issued a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement warning of a life-threatening storm surge along the coast of Levy County. A Storm Surge Watch is currently in effect for Coastal Levy.
Hurricane Isaias, located approximately 280 miles west-southwest of Cedar Key, is moving north-northeast at 16 mph with sustained winds of 120 mph. While the hurricane is expected to make landfall near Pensacola, significant impacts are anticipated for Coastal Levy County.
Residents in Coastal Levy should prepare for potential storm surge of 2 to 4 feet from the Suwannee River to Yankeetown. This could lead to inundation, damage to coastal buildings, washed-out roads, major beach erosion, and damage to marinas. Isolated tornadoes and dangerous rainfall flooding are also possible in Levy County, potentially causing evacuations and rapid inundation in low-lying areas.
Local officials advise following all evacuation orders. Those in flood-vulnerable areas should plan to move to higher ground. Closely monitor weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news for updates. Have multiple ways to receive Tornado Warnings and be ready to shelter quickly.
This alert was issued on October 9 at 11:29 AM EDT and expires at 7:30 PM UTC on the same day. The next NWS update is expected around 5 PM EDT.
