Residents along Coastal Levy County should prepare for life-threatening storm surge with significant impacts as Hurricane Isaias approaches. A Storm Surge Watch is in effect, according to a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tampa Bay Ruskin FL at 5:11 AM EDT today, October 9.

Hurricane Isaias, currently located approximately 360 miles west-southwest of Cedar Key, is moving north-northeast at 15 mph with 110 mph winds. The NWS forecasts it to make landfall this evening. Coastal Levy County could experience storm surge of 2 to 4 feet. This could lead to inundation, damage to buildings near the coast, washed-out escape routes, major beach erosion, and damage to marinas and docks.

Although tropical storm force winds are not expected for the local area, coastal Citrus, Hernando, Pasco, Pinellas, and Hillsborough Counties may experience locally hazardous surge with limited impacts. Residents are advised to follow advice from local officials regarding evacuations and to review emergency plans and supply kits. Monitor weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news for updates. The next NWS statement is expected around 11 AM EDT today.
