Life-Threatening Storm Surge Expected for Coastal Levy Communities

A Storm Surge Watch has been issued for Cedar Key, Yankeetown, and Fowler Bluff, with life-threatening storm surge of 2-4 feet possible through Saturday morning; residents should shelter immediately.

Coastal Levy residents in Cedar Key, Yankeetown, and Fowler Bluff are under a Storm Surge Watch, issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tampa Bay Ruskin, FL, effective October 9 at 4:59 PM EDT. Life-threatening storm surge of 2-4 feet above ground is possible through Saturday morning.

Residents in surge-prone areas are urged to shelter immediately against this life-threatening storm surge. Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete. Evacuees must be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding and remain in a safe location.

Additional rainfall of approximately 1 inch is forecast, with the potential for moderate flooding. Emergency plans should include the possibility of evacuations and rescues due to heavy rain. Heed any flood watches and warnings.

The NWS also indicates a potential for a few tornadoes. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly. While winds are expected to remain below tropical storm force, sustained winds of 10-15 mph with gusts to 30 mph are possible. Little to no preparations are needed for wind at this time, but residents should ensure emergency readiness should the forecast change. This watch is set to expire on October 10 at 1:00 AM UTC.
