Life-Threatening Storm Surge Expected for Coastal Levy County
Coastal Levy County faces life-threatening storm surge, potential tornadoes, and dangerous rainfall flooding from Hurricane Isaias; residents should prepare immediately.
Coastal Levy County residents should prepare immediately for life-threatening storm surge and potential tornadoes as Hurricane Isaias approaches. The National Weather Service in Tampa Bay Ruskin FL issued a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement today, October 9, at 5:12 PM EDT, highlighting significant impacts expected.
A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for Coastal Levy, with potential inundation of 2 to 4 feet. This could lead to damage to buildings near the coast, washed-out escape routes, major beach erosion, and significant damage to marinas and docks. Isolated tornadoes are also possible, which could cause power outages and damage to structures and vehicles.
Dangerous rainfall flooding is anticipated in Levy County, potentially prompting evacuations and rescues as rivers and small streams may overflow their banks. Floodwaters could enter some structures and make driving hazardous.
Hurricane Isaias is currently located about 240 miles west of Cedar Key, moving North at 17 mph with 115 mph winds. While the hurricane is forecast to make landfall near Pensacola, the eastern side of the storm still poses a threat to coastal Levy County.
Residents must heed the advice of local officials regarding evacuations. Check emergency plans and kits. Those in low-lying areas vulnerable to flooding should plan to move to higher ground. Monitor weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news for official updates. Be ready to shelter quickly for potential tornado warnings. The next update from the National Weather Service is expected around 11 PM EDT tonight.
