Weston residents should prepare for the upcoming flu season, which typically begins in October and can extend through May. Local health experts note that while influenza circulates year-round, colder months bring a significant increase in cases, even in South Florida.

Primary care physician Charles Garven, MD, stated that flu season sees a dramatic rise in influenza cases, often coinciding with other respiratory illnesses such as the common cold and RSV. "You can come down with the flu any time of year, but it’s much more common during the cold-weather months," Dr. Garven said.

The peak of flu season generally occurs between December and February. Historically, February has been the most common peak month, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, Dr. Garven cautioned that the high point for flu activity can shift, sometimes appearing as early as December or as late as March in different years. Cases typically decline in early spring, with numbers becoming very low by May.

Health officials strongly recommend an annual flu vaccination to protect against the flu. "The flu we experienced last year may not be the one we see this year, and this year’s flu may not be the one we face next year. So, getting an annual shot is key to protecting yourself and your family," Dr. Garven advised. He added that vaccination is beneficial even if individuals missed the early fall window.
