Weston residents considering or currently using GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy for weight loss should understand the potential effects of stopping treatment. Endocrinologist and obesity medicine specialist Peminda Cabandugama, MD, explained that while these medications effectively manage chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, their benefits cease once treatment stops.

Dr. Cabandugama stated that discontinuing GLP-1s can increase appetite as the medication's appetite-regulating effects fade. Previously managed cravings may also return. Studies indicate a significant likelihood of weight regain, with approximately 60% of individuals regaining lost weight within a year of stopping the medication. This risk increases if lifestyle changes, like diet and exercise, were not sustained during treatment.

Beyond weight, stopping GLP-1s can affect other health markers. Weight regain could lead to Type 2 diabetes in those with prediabetes. Individuals with diabetes may see an increase in blood sugar levels. Additionally, weight gain following cessation can elevate cardiovascular risk factors, including blood pressure and cholesterol. Dr. Cabandugama emphasized that GLP-1s address numerous metabolic conditions, contributing to overall health and quality of life beyond weight management.

Discontinuing these medications also eliminates potential side effects, often a reason for stopping. These include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, bloating, and indigestion. Dr. Cabandugama advises anyone looking to stop treatment to consult a healthcare provider for a personalized plan. While tapering off medication under guidance may help, no universal protocol exists, and she cautioned against self-administered “microdosing.”

Successfully stopping GLP-1s without significant weight regain or associated health issues often depends on adopting healthier daily routines. This includes maintaining a nutritious diet, regular exercise, stress reduction, adequate sleep, and proactive management of chronic conditions. Addressing the underlying factors contributing to obesity and related diseases can improve long-term success without medication. Restarting GLP-1s is possible, but research suggests they may be less effective due to a phenomenon called “metabolic memory.”
