The popular idea that people are either "left-brained" or "right-brained" is a common but scientifically unfounded way to categorize personalities and strengths. Health psychologist Grace Tworek, PsyD, explained that this notion is flawed.

While the brain's cerebrum does have distinct left and right hemispheres with specialized functions, personality is not determined by one hemisphere's dominance. The left hemisphere typically handles language, logic, and analytical thinking, including tasks like analyzing information, communication, planning, reading, writing, memory, and problem-solving. It also controls the right side of the body. The right hemisphere is often associated with creativity, imagination, intuition, processing emotions, and understanding visual and spatial information. It controls the left side of the body.

However, Tworek emphasized that both hemispheres work together to perform everyday tasks. For instance, a conversation requires both the language processing of the left hemisphere and the interpretation of facial expressions and tone from the right hemisphere. Research, including a study of over 1,000 participants, found no evidence that people consistently rely more heavily on one hemisphere than the other.

Tworek advises against self-labeling as strictly "left-brained" or "right-brained." Individuals should challenge themselves to develop skills that do not come naturally, whether analytical or creative.
