Beach Hazards Statement Issued: Dangerous Conditions on Santa Barbara Coasts
A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for Santa Barbara County coasts until October 13, warning of dangerous rip currents, breaking waves, and minor tidal overflow flooding; residents are advised to stay out of the water and off rock jetties.
Santa Barbara County residents and visitors are advised to remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or to stay near occupied lifeguard towers. A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Los Angeles/Oxnard CA, effective immediately until Tuesday, October 13, at 2:00 PM PDT.
The affected areas include the Santa Barbara County Southwestern Coast and Santa Barbara County Southeastern Coast. Minor tidal overflow flooding is expected, along with dangerous rip currents and breaking waves due to elevated surf.
Impacts include the possibility of pooling seawater around high tide at beach and harbor areas, which is uncommon with normal tidal ranges. Enhanced beach erosion is also possible. The NWS indicates a very low risk of significant damage. However, there is an increased risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea, and waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats nearshore.
High tides of 6.6 to 7.2 feet are anticipated each morning, with large secondary high tides in the evening hours. The NWS strongly advises staying off rock jetties, as they can be deadly under these conditions.
