Winter Fishing Season Kicks Off Strong in Monroe County
Monroe County anglers are already reporting a promising start to the winter fishing season, despite it still being mid-April. Local fishermen are seeing early success with a variety of species, signaling what many hope will be a bountiful few months on the water.
Reports from Lake Monroe indicate good catches of crappie and bass, with several local enthusiasts sharing their hauls. "The crappie are biting early this year, which is always a good sign," noted one seasoned angler at the Lake Monroe boat ramp yesterday. Further south, along the St. Johns River near Astor, catfish and bluegill are also making an appearance, drawing out both recreational and more serious fishermen.
Bait shops across the county, from the Tackle Box on Main Street in Sanford to Bob's Bait & Tackle in Deltona, are already seeing increased traffic. Owners are stocking up on live minnows, worms, and various lures to meet the early demand. "We've had a steady stream of customers looking for everything from shiners to specialized jigs," said the proprietor of a local bait shop, anticipating a busy season.
Local authorities remind all anglers to ensure they have current Florida fishing licenses and to adhere to all size and bag limits. Information on regulations can be found on the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) website.
