September Tarpon Update for Monroe County Anglers

Monroe County anglers are looking back at a September 2025 that offered mixed results for tarpon fishing, according to local reports. While the peak season for these silver kings typically winds down by late summer, dedicated fishermen still found opportunities, particularly in the backcountry and around the bridges.

The early part of September last year saw some lingering larger tarpon in their usual haunts, with a few notable catches reported near the historic Seven Mile Bridge and Bahia Honda. Anglers using live bait, such as mullet and pinfish, experienced the most success during these periods. However, as the month progressed, the larger migratory fish became scarcer, shifting the focus to juvenile tarpon.

Backcountry guides, many based in Islamorada, noted consistent action with smaller tarpon in the mangrove-fringed shallow waters of Florida Bay. These younger fish, often ranging from 20 to 50 pounds, provided exciting light-tackle sport. Fly fishermen, in particular, found good numbers of these smaller tarpon willing to strike well-presented flies in the calmer, protected waters.

Weather patterns in September 2025 played a significant role. A few late-season tropical disturbances brought some unsettled conditions, which temporarily disrupted fishing efforts. However, the periods of stable weather between these systems often led to improved bite windows, as the fish became more active after the fronts passed.

Local bait shops reported steady sales of live bait and tarpon-specific lures throughout the month, indicating continued angler interest despite the transition out of peak season. While not a banner month for trophy tarpon, September 2025 still offered rewarding experiences for those who knew where to look and adapted their techniques to the changing conditions in Monroe County waters.
