Late March Tarpon Fishing Report for Monroe County

Monroe County anglers experienced a promising start to the tarpon season in late March, with several notable catches reported across the Lower Keys. While the full migration is still weeks away, the presence of these "silver kings" has generated considerable excitement among local fishing enthusiasts and guides.

Reports from the flats around Big Pine Key and Marathon indicated scattered tarpon sightings and hookups during the last week of March. Captain Mark Johnson, a long-time guide operating out of Islamorada, the sportfishing capital of the Florida Keys, noted that "the fish are definitely here, just not in their usual numbers yet. We're seeing some good-sized resident fish, and a few early arrivals." Johnson emphasized that patience and precise casting were key to success.

Anglers targeting tarpon in the backcountry areas, particularly near the bridges and channels like the iconic Seven Mile Bridge, also reported some action. Live bait, primarily mullet and pinfish, proved effective for those fishing the deeper cuts during tidal movements. Fly fishermen, while facing more challenging conditions, managed to entice a few strikes, particularly during periods of calm weather and clear water.

The late March activity serves as an encouraging precursor to the peak tarpon season, which typically runs from April through June. Local tackle shops, like the one on Stock Island, have already seen an uptick in sales of tarpon-specific gear, including heavy-duty rods, reels, and a variety of artificial lures designed to mimic local baitfish.

As water temperatures continue to rise and the full migration gets underway, Monroe County expects to welcome a significant number of anglers eager to test their skills against one of the most iconic game fish in the Florida Keys. Residents and visitors alike are reminded to observe all fishing regulations and practice catch-and-release to ensure the sustainability of this valuable fishery.
