Monroe County Residents Seek Guidance on Window Blind Measurements

MONROE COUNTY, April 14, 2026 – As spring cleaning and home improvement projects pick up across Monroe County, many residents are turning their attention to window treatments. A common hurdle in this process is accurately measuring for new blinds, a task that, if done incorrectly, can lead to ill-fitting products and wasted time and money.

Local hardware stores and home improvement centers in areas like Key Largo and Marathon report an increase in questions from customers regarding how to properly measure their windows for blinds. “We often see folks come in with rough estimates or measurements that don’t account for inside versus outside mounts,” explained Sarah Jenkins, a long-time associate at Monroe Hardware on Main Street. “Getting it right the first time saves a lot of hassle.”

For those looking to tackle this project, understanding the two primary measurement methods is key: inside mount and outside mount.

Inside Mount: This method involves installing blinds within the window frame, creating a clean, integrated look. To measure for an inside mount, residents should measure the width of the window opening at three points—top, middle, and bottom—and use the smallest measurement. For height, measure at three points—left, center, and right—and again, use the smallest measurement. It’s crucial not to make any deductions; the blind manufacturer will typically do this to ensure a proper fit.

Outside Mount: An outside mount means the blinds will be installed on the wall or window trim outside the window opening. This is often chosen for windows with shallow frames, to block more light, or to make a window appear larger. For an outside mount, measure the width of the area you want the blinds to cover, adding at least 1.5 to 3 inches on each side for optimal light control and privacy. For height, measure from where you want the top of the headrail to sit to where you want the bottom of the blind to reach, typically adding 2 to 3 inches above and below the window opening.

Before purchasing, residents are advised to double-check all measurements. Many local retailers, including those in Islamorada and Big Pine Key, offer measurement guides and sometimes even in-home consultation services to ensure accuracy. Taking the time to measure precisely can ensure that new blinds enhance the comfort and aesthetic of any Monroe County home.
