Body found floating off Long Beach identified as missing boater
MONROE COUNTY – Authorities have identified the body recovered yesterday, April 16, floating approximately a quarter-mile off Long Beach in the Florida Keys, as a boater reported missing earlier this week. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office confirmed the identity this morning, though the name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The discovery was made by a local fisherman around 10:30 a.m. yesterday, who immediately contacted the Monroe County Coast Guard. Coast Guard crews responded quickly to the scene, recovering the body and transporting it to the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office for identification and an autopsy.
The individual had been reported missing to the Sheriff's Office on Tuesday, April 14, after failing to return from a solo fishing trip in the pristine waters near Long Beach. A search operation involving the Coast Guard, the Monroe County Sheriff's Marine Unit, and local volunteer search and rescue teams from the Keys had been underway since the report was filed.
While the investigation is ongoing, preliminary findings suggest no foul play. The cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner's Office. Further details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office extends its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.
