Beach Hazards Statement Issued: Dangerous Conditions for SLO and Santa Barbara Beaches
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara County Central Coast Beaches, warning of dangerous surf conditions, strong rip currents, and tidal overflow, urging residents to stay out of the water.
Beachgoers in San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County Central Coast Beaches are advised to remain out of the water due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA. This statement is effective immediately, October 9, at 2:18 PM PDT, and will remain in effect until October 11 at 6:00 AM PDT.
Dangerous surf conditions, including minor tidal overflow flooding and strong rip currents, are expected. Additionally, a High Surf Advisory predicts large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet from Sunday, October 10, at 6 AM PDT to Monday, October 11, at 10 PM PDT. High tides of 6.6 to 7.2 feet are anticipated each morning.
The NWS reports that pooling of seawater is possible around high tide at beach and harbor areas, and enhanced beach erosion is also expected. While the risk for significant damage is very low, there is an increased risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea, and waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, potentially capsizing small boats nearshore.
For your safety, remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly in such conditions; stay off the rocks. This Beach Hazards Statement is expected to expire on October 10 at 4:00 PM UTC, with the High Surf Advisory continuing through Monday.
