Beach Hazards: Avoid San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara County Waters
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara County Central Coast Beaches, warning of dangerous surf, strong rip currents, and potential tidal overflow. Residents are advised to avoid the water and stay off rock jetties from October 10 at 1:57 AM PDT until October 11 at 6:00 AM PDT.
Residents and visitors in San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County Central Coast Beaches are advised to remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions and strong rip currents. A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Los Angeles/Oxnard CA, effective immediately, October 10 at 1:57 AM PDT, until October 11 at 6:00 AM PDT.
This advisory indicates minor tidal overflow flooding and strong rip currents are expected. Additionally, a High Surf Advisory is in effect from 6 AM Sunday to 10 PM PDT Monday, with large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet anticipated. High tides ranging from 6.6 to 7.2 feet are expected each morning.
Impacts include possible pooling of seawater around high tide at beach and harbor areas and enhanced beach erosion. The NWS states that the risk for significant damage is very low, but there is an increased risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea, and waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats nearshore.
For your safety, stay near occupied lifeguard towers if you must be near the water. Rock jetties can be deadly in such conditions; stay off the rocks.
