Beach Hazards Statement Issued for Central Coast: Dangerous Conditions Expected
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara County beaches until October 12, warning of dangerous rip currents, large waves, and minor tidal overflow; residents are advised to stay out of the water.
Residents and visitors along San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara County beaches are advised to remain out of the water due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Los Angeles/Oxnard CA. This statement is effective immediately, October 8, 2026, at 1:10 PM PDT, and remains in effect until October 12, 2026, at 2:00 PM PDT.
Dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves are expected due to elevated surf conditions. Minor tidal overflow flooding is also anticipated, particularly around morning high tides reaching 6.6 to 7.2 feet. This could lead to pooling of seawater in beach and harbor areas and enhanced beach erosion. No significant property damage is currently expected.
The NWS warns of an increased risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea, and waves can wash individuals off beaches and rocks. Small boats nearshore may also be capsized. The affected areas include all San Luis Obispo County Beaches, Santa Barbara County Central Coast Beaches, Santa Barbara County Southwestern Coast, and Santa Barbara County Southeastern Coast.
For your safety, remain out of the water or stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Do not approach rock jetties, as they can be deadly under these conditions.
