Storm Surge Watch Issued for Southern Jackson; Evacuations Possible

A Storm Surge Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) New Orleans for Southern Jackson, effective October 7, 2026, at 3:54 PM CDT. This alert impacts Pascagoula, Ocean Springs, St. Martin, Gautier, and Moss Point, and will expire October 7, 2026, at 7:00 PM CDT.

Life-threatening storm surge of 4-7 feet above ground is possible from Friday morning until Saturday morning. Evacuation preparations should be underway. Residents in affected areas are urged to assemble disaster supplies and know their evacuation route. Leave immediately if evacuation orders are issued for your area, as failure to comply could result in loss of life.

Peak winds are forecast to reach 25-35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. However, there is potential for life-threatening wind of Category 1 or 2 hurricane force (74-110 mph). Efforts to protect life and property should be rigorously underway, and preparations must be completed before winds become hazardous. Extensive damage to roofs, mobile homes, trees, and infrastructure is possible, leading to widespread power and communication outages. Some roads and access routes may become impassable.

Heavy rainfall of 3-6 inches is expected, with isolated higher amounts, leading to potential moderate flooding. Be prepared for evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings. For additional information and resources, visit msema.org.
