Hurricane Watches Expand Inland: Prepare for Tropical Storm Isaias
Hurricane Watches have expanded inland in coastal Mississippi for Tropical Storm Isaias; residents in affected areas of Southeast Louisiana and South Mississippi must prepare for life-threatening wind, storm surge, and heavy rainfall beginning Friday.
NEW ORLEANS, LA – October 7, 2026 – The National Weather Service (NWS) in New Orleans has expanded Hurricane Watches inland for Northern Harrison and Northern Jackson counties in Mississippi as Tropical Storm Isaias strengthens in the Gulf. Residents in affected areas, including parts of Southeast Louisiana and South Mississippi, must finalize preparedness measures as impacts are expected Friday into Saturday.
A Hurricane Watch is now in effect for Northern Harrison and Northern Jackson. Storm Surge and Hurricane Watches are in effect for Southern Harrison and Southern Jackson. Eastern Orleans, Lower Plaquemines, Lower St. Bernard, Southeast St. Tammany, and Southern Hancock are under a Storm Surge Watch and Tropical Storm Watch. Upper St. Bernard is under a Storm Surge Watch. Tropical Storm Isaias, currently 540 miles south-southwest of New Orleans, is moving east-northeast at 8 mph with 50 mph winds and is forecast to bring life-threatening wind, storm surge, and heavy rainfall.
Coastal Mississippi east of Ocean Springs may experience extensive impacts including considerable roof damage, downed trees, and widespread power outages. Coastal Mississippi west of Ocean Springs and extreme coastal Southeast Louisiana (Mouth of Mississippi River eastward) could face dangerous wind. Life-threatening storm surge of 3 to 5 feet is expected from the Mississippi River mouth to the Rigolets and Bay Saint Louis westward. East of Bay Saint Louis, 5 to 7 feet of storm surge is possible. Major rainfall flooding is anticipated in Jackson County, MS.
Residents should follow local official advice regarding evacuations. Complete all outdoor preparations as soon as possible before conditions deteriorate. Have an emergency plan and kit ready. Monitor official NWS updates, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news for critical information. The next update is expected around 5 PM EDT, or sooner if conditions warrant.
