Rip Current Danger, Coastal Flooding Expected Today
A Rip Current Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory are in effect today, October 10, for coastal Georgia and South Carolina, bringing dangerous rip currents and potential saltwater inundation to roads. Residents should take precautions and avoid hazardous conditions.
Coastal residents and beachgoers are advised to take immediate precautions as a Rip Current Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory have been issued for our area. The National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston SC has issued a High Rip Current Risk in effect through this evening, October 10.
Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect from 7 AM to 11 AM EDT this morning, October 10. Up to one half foot of saltwater inundation above ground level is expected along shorelines and tidal waterways. This may impact roads, and drivers should allow extra time for travel and avoid driving through water of unknown depth.
Affected areas include Coastal Bryan, Coastal Chatham, Coastal Liberty, and Coastal McIntosh Counties in Georgia, as well as Beaufort and Coastal Jasper Counties in South Carolina.
For those near the water, dangerous rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore. If you plan to swim, do so near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, remain calm and float. Do not swim against the current. Instead, swim parallel to the shoreline. If you cannot escape, face the shore and signal for help.
High tide at Fort Pulaski is expected around 8:45 AM this morning, with inundation possible one to two hours before and after this time. Property owners in flood-prone areas should take necessary protective actions. For additional water level and flood impact information, visit water.weather.gov.
