Coastal residents and visitors are advised to remain out of the water due to dangerous rip currents and high surf conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston SC has issued a Rip Current Statement and a High Surf Advisory for the coasts of Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, McIntosh, Beaufort, and Coastal Jasper counties.

A High Rip Current Risk is in effect until 8:00 PM EDT this evening, October 6. Dangerous rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Inexperienced swimmers are particularly urged to stay out of the water.

Additionally, a High Surf Advisory is in effect until 2:00 PM EDT on Wednesday, October 7. Large breaking waves of 4 to 7 feet are expected in the surf zone. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions are anticipated, along with localized beach erosion, especially around high tide.

If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises relaxing and floating. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Always swim near a lifeguard if possible.
