Coastal residents and visitors in Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, and McIntosh counties are advised of dangerous rip currents and high surf conditions today, October 7th.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston SC has issued a Rip Current Statement effective until 8:00 PM EDT this evening. A High Surf Advisory is also in effect until 2:00 PM EDT this afternoon, warning of large breaking waves of 4 to 5 feet in the surf zone. These conditions pose dangerous swimming and surfing risks, along with localized beach erosion.

Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to these dangerous surf conditions. If you choose to swim, do so near a lifeguard.

If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises you to relax and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If you are unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
