High Risk of Dangerous Rip Currents and High Surf Along Georgia Coast
A high risk of dangerous rip currents and high surf is in effect for coastal Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, and McIntosh counties until 8 PM EDT today, October 7, with waves reaching 4 to 6 feet.
Coastal residents and visitors in Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, and McIntosh counties are advised to stay out of the water today, October 7, due to a high risk of dangerous rip currents and high surf conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston SC has issued a Rip Current Statement effective until 8:00 PM EDT this evening.
Large breaking waves of 4 to 6 feet are expected in the surf zone. These conditions create dangerous swimming and surfing environments and may cause localized beach erosion. Rip currents can quickly pull even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
The NWS advises inexperienced swimmers to remain out of the water. Swimmers should always swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, remain calm and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. Instead, swim parallel to the shoreline to escape the current. If you are unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
