Rip Current Statement Issued: High Risk, High Surf, Coastal Flood Advisory
A Rip Current Statement, High Surf Advisory, and Coastal Flood Advisory are in effect for coastal Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, and McIntosh counties, with dangerous rip currents, high surf, and coastal flooding expected through Wednesday.
Coastal residents and visitors in Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, and McIntosh counties are advised to take immediate precautions as a Rip Current Statement, High Surf Advisory, and Coastal Flood Advisory have been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston SC.
A High Rip Current Risk is in effect through Wednesday evening, October 7th, meaning dangerous rip currents are expected. Inexperienced swimmers should stay out of the water. If caught in a rip current, relax and float, don't swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
A High Surf Advisory is also in effect until 2 PM EDT Wednesday, October 7th, with large breaking waves of 4 to 7 feet in the surf zone. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions are anticipated.
Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening, October 6th. Up to one-half foot of inundation above ground level is expected along shorelines and tidal waterways. Saltwater inundation may impact some roads. Residents are advised that if travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. High tide will occur around 5:31 PM today at Fort Pulaski, with saltwater inundation possible several hours before and after high tide. Significant beach erosion could also occur.
