Coastal Colleton and Charleston Counties are under a Coastal Flood Warning and a High Rip Current Risk today, October 10th, with significant saltwater inundation and dangerous rip currents expected.

Residents in Coastal Colleton and Charleston Counties should take immediate action to protect flood-prone property. A Coastal Flood Warning and a High Rip Current Risk are in effect as of 2:26 AM EDT this morning, issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston SC.

The Coastal Flood Warning is active from 7 AM to 11 AM EDT today, October 10th. One to two feet of saltwater inundation above ground level is expected along shorelines and tidal waterways. This significant flooding will render numerous roads impassable, and properties may also flood. High tide in Charleston will occur around 8:45 AM, with inundation possible 1 to 2 hours before and after this time. If travel is necessary, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.

The High Rip Current Risk is in effect through this evening, October 10th. Dangerous rip currents are expected. Rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore. If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises to relax and float, not to swim against the current. If able, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Swim near a lifeguard if possible.
