Dangerous Rip Currents, High Surf, and Coastal Flooding Expected

A Rip Current Statement, High Surf Advisory, and Coastal Flood Advisory are in effect for Charleston and Coastal Colleton Counties, bringing dangerous rip currents, large waves, and up to one foot of coastal inundation.

Charleston and Coastal Colleton County residents and visitors should be aware of a Rip Current Statement, High Surf Advisory, and Coastal Flood Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS Charleston SC) effective immediately.

A High Rip Current Risk is in effect until 8:00 PM EDT this evening, meaning dangerous rip currents are expected. Swimmers, particularly those inexperienced, are advised to remain out of the water. If caught in a rip current, relax and float; do not swim against the current. Swim parallel to the shoreline if possible, or face the shore and call for help.

A High Surf Advisory is also in effect until 2:00 PM EDT Wednesday, October 7th, with large breaking waves of 4 to 7 feet anticipated in the surf zone. A Coastal Flood Advisory is in place until 8:00 PM EDT this evening, predicting up to one foot of inundation above ground level along shorelines and tidal waterways, with Charleston expecting 7.6 to 7.8 feet Mean Lower Low Water. High tide in Charleston will occur around 5:28 PM today, and saltwater inundation is possible several hours before and after this time. This may lead to impassable roads and minor property flooding. Drivers should allow extra travel time, avoid barricades, and not drive through water of unknown depth. Property owners in flood-prone areas should take necessary protective actions.
