Residents in Coastal Colleton and Charleston Counties should prepare for a High Rip Current Risk and Coastal Flood Watch, effective immediately. The National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston SC issued the alert tonight, October 9, at 8:35 PM EDT.

The High Rip Current Risk is in effect through Saturday evening, October 10. Dangerous rip currents are expected. Swimmers are advised to swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float; do not swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

A Coastal Flood Watch is also in effect from 6 AM EDT Saturday, October 10, through Saturday morning. Up to one foot of inundation above ground level is possible along shorelines and tidal waterways, with Charleston expecting 7.8 to 8.0 feet Mean Lower Low Water. High tide in Charleston is anticipated around 8:23 AM Saturday, with saltwater inundation possible one to two hours before and after this time. This may lead to impassable roads and minor property flooding. If travel is necessary, allow extra time and do not drive through water of unknown depth or around barricades. Protect flood-prone property. Further water level information is available at water.weather.gov.
