A Storm Surge Watch has been issued for Upper St. Bernard, including Chalmette, Meraux, and Violet, effective today, October 7, at 1:00 PM CDT by the National Weather Service New Orleans. Residents should prepare for life-threatening storm surge flooding and potential hazardous winds.
Life-threatening storm surge of 3-5 feet above ground is possible from Friday morning until Saturday morning. Evacuation orders may be issued; if given, leave your area immediately. Failure to heed evacuation orders could result in loss of life. Significant impacts are possible, including overtopping of levees and weakened or washed-out escape routes.
Hazardous winds of 20-30 mph with gusts up to 35 mph are forecast, with a potential for winds between 39-57 mph. Efforts to protect property should be underway now. Limited damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Scattered power and communications outages are also anticipated.
