A Hurricane Warning has been issued for Southern Jackson Parish, with Tropical Storm Isaias intensifying and expected to become a hurricane by Thursday morning, bringing significant wind and storm surge threats to the region from Friday afternoon into Saturday.

Residents in Southern Jackson Parish are now under a Hurricane Warning, while Southern Harrison, Eastern Orleans, Lower Plaquemines, Lower St. Bernard, Southeast St. Tammany, and Southern Hancock are under a Storm Surge Warning and Tropical Storm Warning. Northern Hancock and Northern Harrison have also been issued a Tropical Storm Warning.

The National Weather Service in New Orleans reports Tropical Storm Isaias, currently 500 miles south-southwest of New Orleans, is expected to become a hurricane by Thursday morning. It is moving east-northeast at 9 mph with 70 mph winds.

Impacts are expected from Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. Coastal areas east of Ocean Springs, MS, could experience hurricane-force winds and storm surges of 5 to 7 feet. Areas west of Ocean Springs to the mouth of the Mississippi River face tropical storm-force winds and 3 to 5 feet of storm surge.

Protect against dangerous wind and life-threatening storm surge. Follow local officials' advice, complete all preparations, and ensure you are in a safe location before winds or flooding begin. Do not rely on 911 during the storm if conditions are unsafe. Keep cell phones charged. Closely monitor weather.gov, NOAA Weather radio, or local news for updates. The next update is expected around 5 AM CDT.
