A Storm Surge Watch has been issued for Lower St. Bernard, including Yscloskey, Delacroix, and Shell Beach, with potential life-threatening storm surge and dangerous winds. Residents must prepare now and be ready to evacuate if ordered.
A Storm Surge Watch has been issued for Lower St. Bernard, including Yscloskey, Delacroix, and Shell Beach, effective immediately as of October 7 at 3:54 PM CDT. The National Weather Service in New Orleans warns of potential life-threatening storm surge and significant wind impacts. Residents in affected areas should begin preparations now.
A peak storm surge inundation of 3-5 feet above ground is possible from Friday morning until Saturday morning. This could lead to significant damage to coastal buildings and make escape routes impassable. If evacuation orders are issued for your area, you must leave. Failure to evacuate could result in loss of life.
Dangerous winds are also expected, with peak gusts up to 55 mph. There is a potential for winds reaching 58 to 73 mph, which could cause significant damage to roofing, siding, and mobile homes, and turn unsecured objects into dangerous projectiles. Power and communications outages are also possible. Residents should complete all preparations before hazardous winds begin.
Little to no potential for flooding rain or tornadoes is expected at this time. Stay informed of the latest forecasts. For more information and emergency preparedness resources, visit gohsep.la.gov/emergency.
