LOWER ST. BERNARD PARISH – The National Weather Service (NWS) New Orleans has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Lower St. Bernard, including Yscloskey, Delacroix, and Shell Beach, effective October 7 at 10:12 AM CDT. This alert signifies the possibility of life-threatening storm surge and tropical storm-force winds within the next 48 hours.
Residents should prepare immediately for dangerous wind conditions, with peak gusts up to 40 mph and a potential for sustained winds of 58 to 73 mph. Significant damage to property, including roofing, siding, and mobile homes, is possible. Large trees and roadway signs may be affected, leading to impassable roads and scattered power outages. A life-threatening storm surge of 3-5 feet above ground is possible from Friday morning until Saturday morning. Storm surge flooding preparations should be underway. Assemble disaster supplies and know your evacuation route. If evacuation orders are given for your area, leave immediately. Failure to heed evacuation orders may result in loss of life.
Localized flooding from 1-3 inches of rain is also expected, with a potential for a few tornadoes. Have emergency plans for localized flooding and be ready to shelter quickly if a tornado warning is issued. For more information, visit https://gohsep.la.gov/emergency.
