Dangerous Rip Currents Expected Along East Coast Beaches Through Tuesday Morning
A Rip Current Statement is in effect for coastal Volusia, Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, and Brevard counties from the National Weather Service, warning of dangerous rip currents through Tuesday morning; avoid entering the surf and be aware of safety protocols.
Residents and visitors along the coasts of Volusia, Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, and Brevard counties are advised to avoid entering the surf due to dangerous rip currents. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Melbourne has issued a Rip Current Statement effective immediately, October 9, at 12:33 AM EDT, until October 10 at 4:00 AM EDT.
This alert covers Coastal Volusia, Coastal Indian River, Coastal St. Lucie, Coastal Martin, Mainland Northern Brevard, Northern Brevard Barrier Islands, Mainland Southern Brevard, and Southern Brevard Barrier Islands.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore and can sweep even strong swimmers into deeper water. The NWS strongly discourages entering the surf during this period. If caught in a rip current, individuals should relax and float, not swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline. If escape is not possible, face the shore and call or wave for help. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs.
