Rip Current Statement Issued for Local Coasts Through Tonight

A Rip Current Statement is in effect for Coastal Volusia, Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, and Brevard counties through late tonight, advising beachgoers to avoid entering the surf due to dangerous rip currents.

Beachgoers in Coastal Volusia, Coastal Indian River, Coastal St. Lucie, Coastal Martin, Mainland Northern Brevard, Northern Brevard Barrier Islands, Mainland Southern Brevard, and Southern Brevard Barrier Islands are advised to avoid entering the surf due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Melbourne FL.

Dangerous rip currents are expected through late tonight, October 4, 2026, expiring at 4:00 AM EDT on October 5, 2026. Rip currents are powerful channels of water that can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

The NWS advises against swimming in the ocean during this time. If caught in a rip current, individuals should relax and float, avoiding swimming against the current. If possible, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If escape is not possible, face the shore and call or wave for help. Always heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs.
