Coastal Levy County residents are advised to prepare immediately for potential life-threatening storm surge from Hurricane Isaias. A Storm Surge Watch is in effect, indicating possible significant impacts. The National Weather Service (NWS) Tampa Bay Ruskin FL issued this Tropical Cyclone Local Statement on October 8 at 11:04 PM EDT.
Hurricane Isaias, with 105 mph winds, is currently located approximately 420 miles southwest of Cedar Key, moving northeast at 14 mph. While tropical storm force winds are not expected in our immediate area, a storm surge of 2 to 4 feet is possible along the coast from Suwannee River to Yankeetown.
Potential impacts for coastal Levy County include areas of inundation with storm surge flooding, damage to buildings near the coast, compromised escape routes, major beach erosion, and damage to marinas and docks. Coastal Citrus, Hernando, Pasco, Pinellas, and Hillsborough Counties may experience locally hazardous surge with limited impacts. Elsewhere across West Central and Southwest Florida, little to no impact is anticipated.
Residents should follow advice from local officials regarding any evacuations. Review your emergency plan and supplies kit, and secure your home or business. Always heed official orders and monitor weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news for updates. Additional preparedness information can be found at ready.gov, getagameplan.org, and redcross.org.
The NWS Tampa Bay Ruskin FL will issue the next local statement around 5 AM EDT on October 9, or sooner if conditions warrant.
