URGENT: Storm Surge Warning for South Walton, Evacuate Immediately If Ordered
A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for South Walton, including Santa Rosa Beach, Sandestin, and Freeport, with life-threatening storm surge and winds expected. Evacuate immediately if ordered and move to safe shelter before hazardous conditions begin.
A Storm Surge Warning has been issued for South Walton, effective immediately, by the National Weather Service Tallahassee FL. Residents in Santa Rosa Beach, Sandestin, and Freeport are urged to complete evacuation efforts now if ordered, as life-threatening storm surge of 4-7 feet above ground is possible through Saturday morning. Potential for surge flooding greater than 6 feet above ground exists, with large areas of deep inundation and structural damage.
Life-threatening winds of equivalent Tropical Storm force (45-55 mph with gusts to 75 mph) are expected from early Friday afternoon until early Saturday morning, with potential for wind 74 to 110 mph. Plan for considerable wind damage, extensive structural damage to homes, widespread power outages potentially lasting weeks, and impassable roads. Move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with 3-6 inches of rain possible, leading to major flooding. Evacuations and rescues are likely. Heed any flood watches and warnings. The situation is also favorable for several tornadoes; listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelter. For more information, visit NWS Tallahassee, FloridaDisaster.org, or Walton County Emergency Management.
