Extreme Storm Surge Warning for South Walton; Shelter Immediately
An Extreme Storm Surge Warning is in effect for South Walton, including Santa Rosa Beach, Sandestin, and Freeport, with immediate action required to shelter from life-threatening winds and storm surge. Major flooding and several tornadoes are also possible.
An Extreme Storm Surge Warning has been issued for South Walton, including Santa Rosa Beach, Sandestin, and Freeport, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL, effective immediately as of October 9 at 8:28 AM EDT. This warning will remain in effect until 4:30 PM UTC on October 9, 2026.
Life-threatening wind of equivalent Category 1 or 2 hurricane force is expected, with peak winds of 45-60 mph and gusts up to 85 mph. These strong tropical storm force winds are anticipated from early this afternoon until early Saturday morning. Residents are advised to shelter now from life-threatening wind. The area is subject to considerable wind damage.
A life-threatening storm surge of 6-9 feet above ground is possible through Saturday morning. All ordered evacuations should be complete, and evacuees should be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. Residents in affected areas should remain sheltered in a safe location and move to upper floors if necessary to escape rising water.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with an additional 3-6 inches of rain expected, potentially leading to major flooding. Emergency plans should account for major flooding, and evacuations and rescues are likely. Heed any flood watches and warnings.
The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for several tornadoes. Emergency plans should continue to include this potential. Stay informed and move quickly to the safest place within your shelter if a tornado warning is issued.
