Urgent: Dangerous Rip Currents, High Surf for Walton and Bay County Beaches

Dangerous rip currents and high surf are expected for Walton and Bay County Beaches from October 8 to October 11, with advisories issued by NWS Tallahassee FL.

Residents and visitors in South Walton and Coastal Bay areas are advised to stay out of the water due to a High Rip Current Risk and a High Surf Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL.

A Rip Current Statement is effective immediately, October 8 at 11:10 PM EDT, and extends through late Sunday night, October 11. Additionally, a High Surf Warning is in effect from Friday, October 9, at 10 AM CDT until Sunday, October 11, at 10 AM CDT.

Dangerous rip currents are expected, alongside dangerously large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet in the surf zone. These conditions pose a significant threat, as breaking waves can sweep individuals off jetties and docks into dangerous seas. Life-threatening swimming conditions and significant beach erosion are anticipated.

The NWS strongly urges everyone to remain out of the water. Avoid jetties, piers, and other waterside infrastructure. If caught in a rip current, relax and float; do not swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
