Dangerous Rip Currents Expected for East Central Florida Beaches Through Tonight

Dangerous rip currents are expected along East Central Florida beaches from Volusia to Martin Counties through tonight, with authorities advising against entering the surf due to the risk of being swept away.

Residents and visitors along East Central Florida beaches are advised to avoid entering the surf due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Melbourne, FL. The statement is effective immediately, September 28 at 2:30 AM EDT, and will remain in effect through late tonight, expiring September 29 at 3:00 AM EDT.

The affected areas include Coastal Volusia, Coastal Indian River, Coastal Saint Lucie, Coastal Martin, Mainland Northern Brevard, Northern Brevard Barrier Islands, Mainland Southern Brevard, and Southern Brevard Barrier Islands Counties. Dangerous rip currents are expected, which can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

The NWS defines rip currents as powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore, often found at low spots or breaks in sandbars, and near structures like jetties and piers. It is critical to heed advice from lifeguards and observe beach patrol flags and signs.

If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises individuals to relax and float, avoiding swimming against the current. If possible, swim in a direction parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
