CENTRAL ALABAMA – October 9, 2026 – A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for a wide area of Central Alabama as Tropical Storm Isaias continues its northward path across the state. The National Weather Service in Birmingham, AL, issued a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement at 10:09 PM CDT, indicating moderate severity and expected urgency. Residents in affected areas should shelter in place and prepare for significant impacts from wind, rain, and potential tornadoes.

Isaias, currently about 190 miles south of Birmingham and 110 miles south of Montgomery with 90 mph winds, is moving north at 20 mph. While weakening, its wind field is expanding. Gusts of 50 to 60+ mph are expected late tonight through Saturday, potentially causing widespread downed trees and power lines. Rainfall of 1.5 to 4 inches, with isolated totals up to 5 inches, could lead to flash flooding, particularly in urban areas. Isolated tornadoes are possible in far southeast Central Alabama.

The Tropical Storm Warning applies to Autauga, Barbour, Bibb, Bullock, Chambers, Chilton, Clay, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lamar, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Marion, Montgomery, Perry, Pickens, Pike, Randolph, Russell, Shelby, St. Clair, Sumter, Talladega, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa, Walker, and Winston counties.

Actionable Information: Stay indoors and away from windows. Keep a battery-powered radio, charged cell phone, and flashlight ready. Use cell phones sparingly for emergencies. Do not risk personal safety for photos or videos. If a tornado warning is issued, move to an interior room on the lowest floor. Further updates are expected around 4 AM CDT.
